PCAN parents shape new CAMHS provision

The CAMHS services in Kirklees are undergoing significant change, and PCAN parents are playing a significant role in helping to improve services for children with complex learning disabilities and mental health problems.

Since March this year, parents have helped the NHS Commissioners for CAMHS to create the ‘service specification’ (in other words, the document that sets out how services are delivered) for the new Tier 3 services (for children with complex needs) which will come into place in 2013. PCAN parents have given lots of ideas about how the service should run and how children and parents should be treated when working with health professionals. Recently, some PCAN members have given feedback on the draft tender documents which will be used to recruit the new provider, and the NHS have asked PCAN to form a parent’s panel which will be part of selecting the agency that will work with families from next year.
