Autism Assessments in Kirklees

Please see below details from local Clinical Commissioning Groups about changes to speed up the Autism Assessment process:

(more information can be found on their briefing Briefing – PCAN 27 6 13)

Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in Kirklees have appointed Socrates Clinical Psychology to deliver additional  ASC assessments over the next 12 months in a bid to reduce diagnosis waiting times.

This will see the number of assessments rise from around 4 to approximately 16 each month.  The extra assessments will be available from this April.  In order to manage the waiting list, priority will be given to children who have been waiting longest.  South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust will be writing to a number of patients each month to ask if they would like to be seen by Socrates.

As well as investing in extra capacity, the CCGs are looking at how the assessment services can be improved in the longer term.   We are organising an event where you can meet CCG staff and find out more about their plans for the future.    This is likely to be in May.

NB Socrates Clinical Psychology is an independent sector organisation with significant expertise in ASC assessment.

Westminster Commission for Autism – please get involved

Many of you will remember Dr Mike Sills the Consultant Paediatrician who helped so many families. Although he has now retired he is still very much involved in Children’s Services and is passionately keen to improve things. He is working with the MP for Huddersfield, Barry Sheerman, to find out what can be done to improve autism services. They have taken this to London and Mr Sheerman is chairing the Westminster Commission for Autism.

Emily Christou is the Co-ordinator and is travelling round the country collecting facts, opinions, moans, groans and, hopefully, some good news about people’s experiences.

IT IS ONLY WITH SUFFICENT INPUT FROM THOSE HAVING, OR CARING FOR, PEOPLE WITH AUTISM, THAT ANYTHING WILL BE DONE!!

The Government needs to know what the biggest areas of need are and what works. It’s no good saying that you want more educational support for your child unless it is known to make a difference. More Speech and Language Therapy will never be funded unless it is proven to be effective. There is proof that Early Intervention makes a difference – would it have made a difference to your child if they had got an earlier diagnosis?

Please take a look at this letter Westminster commission Autism inquiry and if you would like to share your experiences/views, please look at the blog or email Emily.
